Calling for cultural competence

Loading

Yo no soy hispanohablante.

Last year, I noticed that I had never seen a story in the Threefold written in Spanish. I looked and looked, but I couldn’t find any article or story written in Spanish. “How sad,” I thought, and I decided to write one.

I think it is important that everyone learns another language to communicate with and understand cultures of different people. I know that the majority of people in the U.S. don’t speak Spanish, but at John Brown University there are many people that know Spanish. That doesn’t mean that every student at JBU needs to learn Spanish, but the basic knowledge of the culture and language of Spanish can help those students from Spanish-speaking countries to feel more welcomed.

I’m not a native Spanish speaker. I studied Spanish in high school and at JBU, and I learned little by little. I can’t speak fluently or write everything I want, but I worked to learn a little. At JBU we have the opportunity to learn about many vibrant cultures.

Since coming to JBU, I’ve learned to slow down and appreciate life without a detailed schedule. I learned to live more with the mentality of “Pure Life,” with an emphasis in people, not work. I ate gallo pinto for the first time, I found a new type of music that I love. My Spanish-speaking friends have changed my philosophy of life.

You don’t need to completely learn the minutiae of Spanish and the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries,  but it is very important to understand a little about these magnificent countries and the culture of the people from  these places; It’s possible that you will fall in love with this vibrant culture and beautiful language.
