Spring is now upon us, and each spring brings plenty of developments in the world of sports. In addition to the end of basketball season and the start of baseball, another annual development that has seemingly transpired every spring over the last few years has been the saga surrounding Colin Kaepernick.
Another basketball season at John Brown University is in the books. After picking up opening round wins at Bill George Arena in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament, both the JBU men and women were defeated in the quarterfinal rounds, ending their seasons. The JBU women lost a heartbreaker to Texas Wesleyan in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday, Feb. 25 (61-58), while the JBU men were handed their second loss against Wayland Baptist in Plainview, Texas, on Saturday, Feb. 26 (74-61).
On Friday, Feb. 11, the 2022 side of the season kicked off for the tennis teams at John Brown University. Both the men and women made the trip to Conway, Arkansas, with the men playing three matches in the span of roughly 24 hours, while the women played two. After dropping their opener against Dallas Baptist, the JBU men stormed back to snag a come-from-behind win over Hendrix. Heroics from senior Woody Woodring allowed JBU to start a run that juniors Carson Thoma and Blake Cunningham were able to follow up, as Thoma got the win in the four spot, while Cunningham clinched the match for John Brown.
In the women’s game, JBU had their hands full in the first half, as the Aggies were able to play them close. The Aggies led at several points in the first half, but a big offensive push from Grace Latham in the closing minutes of the second quarter allowed JBU to head to the locker room with the lead, 30-26.
It’s hard to think of very many people outside of Rams and Bengals fans who legitimately believed either team would be in the mix for a Lombardi Trophy going into the playoffs. Despite that, both teams managed to prove their doubters wrong and overcome some tough challenges to be just one win away from being on top of the football world.
Tennis is back at John Brown University (JBU). After playing a couple of contests in the fall semester, the season will kick off again on Friday, Feb. 11, when the men’s and women’s teams travel to Conway, Arkansas, to take on Hendrix College. Going into the season, both the men’s and women’s teams will look to bounce back after sub-.500 seasons—not to say there were no positive developments for both teams last year.
