The John Brown University men’s soccer team opened its season with a successful homestand, dominating Bacone College 5-1 on Thursday and defeating Missouri Baptist 3-1 on Saturday.
In the opener, the Golden Eagles were led by forward Martin Gonzalez’s two-goal effort and a dominant defense. JBU only allowed one shot on goal, by Bacone midfielder James Barker. His goal in the 45th minute ended Pablo Garcia’s shot at a shutout and ended up being the Warriors lone offense.
Against Missouri Baptist, the effort of forward Luke Theimer opened the scoring in the 10th minute and capped a 3-0 Eagle lead with a goal in the 58th minute. The Golden Eagles outshot the Spartans 28 to 12.
The men’s team now goes on the road to face Harding on Sept. 1 before returning home to play Northwestern College (Iowa) on Sept. 7 at 4 p.m.
