In their last game on Thursday, the Golden Eagles escaped with a one point win against an unranked opponent. This game, the Eagles were not as lucky.

John Brown’s undefeated start in conference play came to an end Saturday afternoon as the fourth ranked Golden Eagles were upset by unranked Wayland Baptist 84-70 on the road.

The Pioneers’ senior guard Reggie Fondren had a dominating near double-double performance, scoring 30 points, collecting nine rebounds and going 7-7 from three point range. Wayland senior forward Eric Milam earned 17 points for the Pioneers as well.

WBU shot 63 percent from behind the arc and 38 percent overall. John Brown, on the other hand, struggled to get into a rhythm, shooting only 35 percent from three point range and 38 percent overall.

The Eagles were behind all game after the Pioneers burst out to a 22-5 lead in the first half. JBU eventually whittled the deficit down to five points with 6:46 left in the game, but then Wayland took advantage of two straight Eagles turnovers to go on a 11-3 run, putting the game away for good.

Abel Galliguez had 18 points and Coleston Rakestraw had 17 points for John Brown in the losing effort. Despite the loss, the Eagles are still a game up in the SAC standings on second place OBU. John Brown’s next game will be next Thursday at USAO at 8 p.m.
