“Lay it All Down”: Students encourage campus with music

“Lay it All Down,” Matthew Campbell’s new single in collaboration with Jace Richardson is out at a much-needed time of the academic year.

Campbell, junior integrated marketing and communications major at John Brown University, partnered with Richardson, junior graphic design major to deliver a song about laying down any anxiety, insecurities and problems to God. With finals quickly approaching, the single came out on April 29 as a form of encouragement to any students facing hardships.

“I’ve been praying and processing over Proverbs 3:5-7, which is this idea of trusting in the Lord with all your heart, and he makes straight our paths,” Campbell explained. “Something that I’ve been processing is dealing with some things and just having to continually give that stuff to the Lord to keep moving forward. This was really a song I kind of made for myself as a prayer.”

For the last month, Campbell and Richardson worked on the music project, which has heavy influence from genres like RnB and Hip Hop but also incorporates inspiration from worship music. “I intentionally made it to be like one of those songs that will be stuck in your head because I want people to easily remember the lyrics,” Campbell added.

Campbell’s previous releases have been a source of comfort. His most recent album “FROM DEATH TO LIFE” is a celebration for those who have believed in God and are “brought from death to life,” he said in an interview for The Threefold on Nov. 2021. Now, as another academic year comes to a close, he hopes that students can feel encouraged amid the finals week craziness.

“Lay it All Down” official music video released on April 29.

“Specifically with the song, I really I want to encourage people really to know that whatever has been weighing on them, whatever it is stressing them out, whatever has been causing anxiety, insecurity, fears, doubts, the Lord is the only way for freedom, and he wants to take all that from us,” Campbell said.
