As in former years, John Brown University did not hold classes in honor of the Baptist Minister and activist Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.
The University hosted chapel services in the Cathedral of the Ozarks where students had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Joseph Jones on Jan. 17. Jones has a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice with a specialty in Planned Change and was former Vice Rector of the Christian university in Pakistan. He encouraged students to be “An example, to be light and hope, to be an example,” and examine their daily lives and commit to the justice and love of God. His visit was possible with the collaboration of the JBU Office of Diversity.
On Sunday, Jan. 15, student and Vice President of the Multicultural Organization of Students Active in Christ Zipporah Jones shared with the university the importance of generational healing and forgiveness, as well as reconciliation and love.
MOSAIC also promoted various activities in remembrance of this day. They encouraged students to join in a march and service event, as well as volunteer in a food bank in Fayetteville, Arkansas. They also hosted a movie event in Simmons Great Hall. They watched the movie Emanuel, which is a film that portrays the tragedy of the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015.
