From Spider-Man and Superman to Minions and Lord Farquaad, John Brown University students brought their favorite heroes and villains to life at Late Skate on Friday, Sept. 18.
Held at Roller City in Springdale from 10 p.m. to midnight, the event gave students a chance to dress up, skate and spend time with friends for just $1.
Costumes ranged from classic superheroes like Supergirl to characters from “Despicable Me,” “Wicked” and “Shrek.” With music playing throughout the night, students skated around the rink, caught up with friends and showed off their costumes.
For Spencer Todd, the event was one of his favorites.
“It was the best Late Skate I’ve been to in my three years at JBU,” Todd said. “I went by myself, but I was able to find different groups to be a part of. Everybody was in such a good mood, and it made the entire time a wonderful experience.”
Todd, who dressed as a Minion, said the number of people and the overall atmosphere made the night stand out.
The large turnout was also noticeable outside the rink. Students Jimena Balandrano and Sara Sustaita said they spent nearly an hour waiting in line before getting inside.
“We got there around 10:15 p.m. and didn’t get in until after 11,” Balandrano said. “The line was really long. You can definitely tell the student population is growing.”
Once inside, the costumes were one of the highlights for both students. Balandrano named Vector from “Despicable Me” as her favorite, while Sustaita chose a group dressed as Mormon missionaries.
Neither dressed up for the occasion, explaining that the theme was a little harder to pull off at the last minute.
“With some themes, you can just use clothes you already have to dress as a character,” Balandrano said. “This one was a little harder, especially if you decided to go at the last minute.”
Sustaita also mentioned that the crowded rink made skating difficult at times, especially when some students began chasing one another or attempting tricks.
“I feel like it should be something more chill where everyone can just have a good time,” Sustaita said.
The night ended with a group picture before students headed back to campus, wrapping up another Late Skate filled with creative costumes, music and plenty of time on the rink.
