On Thursday, Sept. 14, John Brown University’s (JBU) Center for Faith and Flourishing hosted the 7th annual Reimagining Faith and the Public Life event. Mark David Hall, at Regent University, and Robert Tracy McKenzie, professor of history at Wheaton College were invited to speak at this year’s event. They participated in a discussion — mediated by Daniel Bennett, associate professor of political science at JBU — offering opposing viewpoints on the impact of Christianity on the American founding.

Yeshua, not Josh: Why Americans need a Jesus of color

What’s wrong with “white Jesus,” you might ask? Christianity is a global religion! Is it not best expressed in an artistic sense through a multicultural lens? In fact, if you were to step into the office of John Brown University’s intercultural studies professor, you might see on her walls art representing Bible stories in a Picasso-esque style with a Chinese flair. This is the work of He Qi, a Chinese artist and theologian who has sought to combine his culture with his training and understanding of Scripture. For generations, as formerly colonized countries have come forth in claiming Christianity as their very own, their artists have similarly taken ownership of Biblical narratives by portraying them as appropriate to their cultural contexts. As early as the 1970s, Christian artistry has arisen from Malawi, Puerto Rico, native New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, portraying the Madonna and Child, Nativity scenes, Adoration of the Magi and more.

Josh Duggar’s trial and how Christians should respond to sexual abuse in the Church

In Dec. 2020, Josh Duggar, an individual who openly admitted to molesting five children during his teenage years, was found guilty of downloading and possessing child pornography. This long-standing case, with first arrests dating back to 2019, is coming to an end with Duggar facing up to 20 years in prison and fines up to $250,000 for each count. Amidst all this, his wife stands by him. The Duggars, a popular family among the Christian community, lead us to ask ourselves an important question: As Christians, how should we respond to similar instances of abuse?
