The Super Mario Bros Movie: A Review

On April 1, movie theaters  released the new “The Super Mario Galaxy” movie, sequel to “The Super Mario Bros Movie” released in 2023. Unlike the original, "The Super Mario Galaxy" movie was a flop.

While the visuals were fun, vibrant and creative, the story was completely lacking. There was no depth, no character development, and really no reason to actually root for the characters.

“It’s clear "The Super Mario Galaxy" movie is best when no one is talking,” movie critic from the Chicago Reader, Kyle Logan said.

When watching a Nintendo movie, especially about the Mario brothers, you expect a movie full of laughter and comedy. Arguably the funniest part of the entire movie happened in the last 10 minutes of the film.

The storyline for "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" was just disappointing with how underdeveloped it was. The characters moved from one place to another without much motivation, not to mention the weird side plot where Rosalina becomes Princess Peach’s sister. There was enough happening action- wise that kept you locked in on the screen, but the story left the audience with nothing of value to take away, leaving audiences feeling empty and unmoved.

However, despite the movie’s flaws, that there was a significant highlight to the movie. The part that stands out most is when Bowser is performing a puppet show to his son, Bowser Jr. The animation is so detailed in this scene that the felt and cardboard almost look real. It’s quite impressive on the animator’s part.

Overall, I would not rate this movie very highly, it had potential to be a great sequel, but I think it just needed more time on the story board.
