Spy vs Spy

Loading

John Brown University’s Student Events and Activities (SEA) hosted their annual Spy vs Spy event, which took place from April 10-14. The game consists of students “shooting” their assigned target—another student signed up for Spy vs Spy—with a small water gun. If the shooter successfully hits their target, they assume that student’s target as their own, and can keep playing until they are taken out. There are a few ground rules, such as that the target must be in a public space on campus (no dorm rooms, cafeteria, or sports practices) and if your target hits you first, they get a chance to run away. Other than that, the game is a free-for-all, and JBU students could be seen running around campus all week in hot pursuit of their targets.

The Problem of Translation

Loading

Lately, I’ve been on a big Russian literature kick. I read Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace for the first time a couple of months ago, and I’m working my way through some Dostoyevsky right now. There seems to be something magnetic about Russian literature; it stands apart from other genres in a way that’s difficult to describe. I find the genre intensely relatable yet foreign enough to provide a novel perspective on human nature. The stories are gripping, with just enough romance to give them a patina of tragedy. They are full of timeless moral dilemmas and social quandaries that remain pertinent across time and space, despite the innumerable cultural divides that exist between 19th-century Russia and 21st-century America. I credit the timelessness of the Russian greats to the fact that their writing is rooted in and constructed around the humanness of their stories. At the end of the day, the plots rely only nominally on time and place and substantively on people and relationships—the setting is merely a catalyst for the social entanglements that are so distinct in Russian literature.

On Religious disaffiliation and what JBU should do about it

Loading

In September 2022, the Pew Research Center published an updated article on its findings on religious disaffiliation in the United States. The results have changed little since The Threefold last published on this topic, but the results are still staggering. The Pew Research Center article states “about 64% of Americans, including children, were Christian.” This is down 26% from the historic high in 1972 and also down 14% from 2002. The following article will be split into two parts, possible reasons for the decline in the church and what JBU students should do in light of religious disaffiliation.
