“Change begins with young people”: Freedom Rider visits JBU

For a couple days, John Brown University hosted on campus one of the two last living Freedom Riders, Charles Person. On Monday, Feb. 21, Person spoke in a Q&A held in the JBU library for the student-led book club that began reading his memoir, “Buses Are a Comin’,” starting on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The following day, Feb. 22, Person spoke during the Chapel service with Trisha Posey, professor of history and director of the Honors Scholars Program, and student Zipporah Jones.

“Lord, pull me closer to who I’m meant to be close to, and push me away from the one I’m not meant to be with,” was the prayer Maddi Garrett said three times before eventually dating Liam Baumgardner. Garrett and Baumgardner had come to John Brown with the intention of not dating their first year of college. In fact, Baumgardner didn’t expect anything besides working how God wanted him to. Still, God had other plans for these two, what Garrett calls “a specific reason.”

Biden presidency faces criticism as first year comes to a close

President Joe Biden’s first year in office has been full of challenges and criticism. Despite the frustrations, Daniel Bennett, the department chair for Political Science at JBU, claims Biden is a return to stability and “boring” politics. With the previous administration’s penchant for uncertainty, things seem to be more uneventful and unsurprising during Biden’s first year. “It’s probably about what we expected,” Bennett said.

Cafe seeks new owners to continue the legacy

Jasmine Allgood opened Tintos & Tapas on Feb. 19, 2019. Allgood transformed an old clothing store into a Colombian café, situated alongside the same stretch of road as Café on Broadway, Pure Joy and Fratelli’s in downtown Siloam Springs. It had been her dream since she was in her twenties to open a café, and for a short period of time, she saw her dream come true. Now, with great sadness, the sun is setting on Tintos & Tapas.
