The Flag Ceremony, A Reminder of the Rich Diversity of a Small College in a Corner of Arkansas

As “Wavin’ Flag” by K’naan played in the background, the lights began to shine, and from the back of the room, flags from various countries appeared, carried by John Brown University students to take the spotlight. The room became filled with tears of joy and longing as the students, faculty, and staff started to recognize the flags that represented them.

The long-standing tradition of Mock Rock brought students together once again on Saturday, Nov. 11, to witness an entertaining and exciting lip-sync battle at the Cathedral of the Ozarks. Hosted by Student Events and Activities (SEA), the event presented ten unforgettable performances of students who were competing for cash prizes, but also enjoying a joyful and fun experience. As participants entered the spotlight, each bringing their carefully chosen songs and choreography, the audience clapped, shouted, and sang along.

“The Addams Family”: Not your average musical

“The Addams Family” made its first appearance in pop culture back in 1938, and ever since, has become a fan favorite. In recent years, Netflix came out with their own twist on the family with “Wednesday” and more and more people have been putting on the musical: “The Addams Family: A New Musical Comedy.”

This year, John Brown University chose it as their fall musical, with the peculiar family gracing the stage of the Berry Performing Art Center on Oct. 27 and 28 and Nov. 2, 3 and 4.

No empty seats: JBU Toilet Paper Game celebrates its 40th anniversary

On Friday, Oct. 27, at Bill George Arena, the men’s Basketball team of John Brown University defeated Barclay College Bears during the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Toilet Paper Game. The game displayed incredible talent, persistent dedication, and a demonstration of teamwork that perfectly captured the spirit of basketball, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.

Amid Nationally Trying Times for the Humanities, JBU’s English Department is Dedicated to Surviving

At the end of the spring 2023 semester, the College of Bible, Humanities and Arts (BHA) faced multiple potentially damaging changes. Patty Kirk, professor of English, and Erin Shaw, professor of Visual Arts, left JBU to take on a new position elsewhere. The music department also lost two professors (Connor Davis and Steve Hamilton) and Jan Luaderdale, the administrative assistant. Brad Gambill, associate professor of English, is also preparing for his retirement within the next few years.
