The Visual Art Department opened the Student Works Show in the Art West Building celebrating creativity and passion. 48 students presented multiple art pieces in different mediums and entered a competition to win different prizes in their categories. The student-led art club hosted the opening reception on Feb. 16 and the works will be shown until March 15.

Blind Dates 2024: Success or Failure?

On Wednesday, Feb. 14, a large group of the student body of John Brown University attended the 2024 Valentine’s event hosted by The Student Government Association (SGA) “Blind Dates”. This initiative was first organized by a JBU alumna back in 2023, who due to economic struggles, requested SGA to host this event logistically and economically for upcoming years. After considering the idea, SGA agreed to sponsor it.

Super Bowl Watch Party

As the biggest football celebration in the U.S. started and the tension for the halftime show increased, JBU students attended the Super Bowl watch party this Sunday, Feb. 12, in the J. Alvin atrium. The event was organized by SEA and the J. Alvin staff. It included snacks, commercial bingo, and a lot of thrill watching the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers play.

Bukele Wins Overwhelming Reelection in El Salvador and Remains the Most Popular President of Latin America

Last week, President Nayib Bukele stood on the balcony of El Salvador’s National Palace celebrating the start of a second term as head of the nation. The elections, which took place on Feb. 4, revealed overwhelming support from the population, who gave him 83% of the national vote. In second place was leftist candidate Farabundo Marti, who received less than 7% of the vote. With this landslide victory, Bukele is set to stay as the undisputed, most popular president of Latin America for a second consecutive year.

California Floods Prompt Evacuations and Infrastructure Concerns

According to The New York Times, the storm, which lingered over Southern California, led to record-breaking rainfall in some areas. Floodwaters inundated parts of Los Angeles County, including Studio City, the Santa Monica Mountains, and the San Gabriel River. While flash flood warnings were lifted on Monday morning, forecasters cautioned that continuous rainfall could increase the risk of further flooding and landslides.

John Brown University’s Innovative Take on “The Glass Menagerie”

Under the direction of JBU associate professor and director Josiah Wallace, the theater department has put together what violinist Mary Patterson has described as a “modern take” on the classic play, with innovative lighting and sound effects being put together by the AVL team to emphasize the show’s central messages. This way, JBU has put on a show that has captivated audiences whilst maintaining Williams’ poignant memory tale of familial dynamics and broken dreams.

CIF Lunar Year

John Brown University through the Council for International Friendship (CIF) celebrated the Lunar New Year last Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024. This celebration comes originally from China. It is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year in the lunisolar calendar. The celebration was planned, assembled, and executed by the CIF team members. Their objective was to introduce to students this celebration by having various food, activities, and music that commemorate this annual festival. The representative foods offered to the students were dumplings and mooncakes, and the activities they offered were calligraphy and lantern making.

Spring semester for many students is full of assignments, tests, and the business that comes with being a college student. With the fast-track pace of a college student’s life, it can be easy to neglect one’s spiritual health. That is why throughout the semester, student organizations and faculty have multiple events planned that aid in the spiritual growth of students.
