Tuesday, November 14, John Brown University’s Center for Faith and Flourishing hosted lecturer Jay W. Richards, PhD, and his presentation on Anti-Human Ideologies. His lecture not only covered certain Anti-Human ideologies such as Deep Ecology, Transhumanism, and Gender Ideology, but also how Christians should respond to them in a world that is rapidly adopting these ideologies.
The John Brown University’s men’s and women’s soccer teams honored their senior players on Senior Night, where the athletes walked alongside their families and were celebrated by their teammates and a supportive crowd. The event, which took place on Oct. 17 for the men’s team and Oct. 21, for the women’s, was sentimental for several of the seniors that had to say goodbye to their teammates and the field where they played for many years. But for a few of them, the celebration also felt bittersweet as they reflected on the injuries that accompanied them and prevented them from playing their last season.
The long-standing tradition of Mock Rock brought students together once again on Saturday, Nov. 11, to witness an entertaining and exciting lip-sync battle at the Cathedral of the Ozarks. Hosted by Student Events and Activities (SEA), the event presented ten unforgettable performances of students who were competing for cash prizes, but also enjoying a joyful and fun experience. As participants entered the spotlight, each bringing their carefully chosen songs and choreography, the audience clapped, shouted, and sang along.
As “Wavin’ Flag” by K’naan played in the background, the lights began to shine, and from the back of the room, flags from various countries appeared, carried by John Brown University students to take the spotlight. The room became filled with tears of joy and longing as the students, faculty, and staff started to recognize the flags that represented them.
Distinguished for its diverse student body, John Brown University hosted the highly anticipated International Food Festival on Wednesday, Nov. 8, an event that enthusiastically brings together JBU students from across the globe to honor their countries. The Council for International Friendship (CIF) was responsible for the organization of the event that took place in Simmons Great Hall. They invited students from 19 different nations to cook food for other JBU students and faculty.
On Saturday, Nov. 4, Ability Tree celebrated its second annual “Ability Tree’s Got Talent.” Tears and laughter adorned the faces of the audience throughout the night. The acts truly displayed the whole-hearted commitment and passion of Ability Tree students.
From Oct. 12 to Oct. 23, “Matiox Nana,” a gallery by Maria Fernanda Chinchilla, a graphic design and photography senior from Guatemala, was exhibited at the Windgate Visual Art East student gallery at John Brown University.
As many people know and have come to realize, Marvel has been at a recent crossroads after “Avengers: Endgame,” which ushered in a new phase for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Most of this new phase has been extremely disappointing except for a few stand out films such as “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” As is the case, many fans have fallen off from keeping up with their favorite heroes, which is accurately shown in the lack of care for Marvel compared to just a few years ago. This all changed with the second season of “Loki.”
Since it began in 2018, Shards of Light (SOL), John Brown University’s literary and art journal has been published every spring semester, showcasing work by students, alumni, faculty, and staff.
On Saturday, Nov. 4, Cera Eckenroth, a freshman member of the cross country team at John Brown University, came in first place at the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) championship meet in Bethany, Okla.
